Project: GIMP (Graphical Interface Machine Processor)

Start: 18-10-2019

End: 31-01-2020

Summary:

Cuthings is responsible for the qualitative processing (CNC processing) of all kinds of sheet material and materials on a roll. Currently, Cuthings has 3 ZUND cutting tables for these operations, which are acquired through lease purchase over 10 years.
At this moment Cuthings has a local focus (clients within a radius of 100 km) and production is largely limited to applications within the graphic and creative sectors. In the last year, however, our client base was expanded with a few larger international companies (industrial applications). Since Cuthings wants to focus more and more on serving customers within this industrial sector, further automation is necessary. The production of semi-finished products and/or end products for the customers is done almost automatically on the basis of the ZUND cutting tables. The pre- and post-treatment of this production, however, still leaves room for further automation. After all, a great deal of time is spent on the calculation of offers (price calculations), creating files that can be used by the ZUND cutting tables (order guidance), assembling and packaging the finished parts (post-processing) and getting rid of the residual products (waste processing).
Given the limited complexity of the processes, Cuthings wants to make additional investments in the short term (standard solutions) for post-processing and waste processing. However, when it comes to pricing and order guidance, there are no standard solutions available. After all, customer files must be interpreted by mutual agreement between Cuthings and customers in order to be able to calculate prices and prepare cutting files.
Cuthings wants to examine by the end of January (2020) whether it is feasible to partly automate these complex processes of price determination and order support.

On our machine: Da Desk - Peter Donders

Peter Donders is a Belgian designer. His work is characterized by a controversial relationship of traditional craftsmanship and high-tech 3D design. Peter regularly uses Cuthings' technology to bring his creations to life. One of these projects is ‘Da desk’, a fine example of CNC customization! A desk table that was milled from 7.5 sheets of 12 mm thick birch plywood. The 2D patterns, optimized to perfection, resulted in 126 individual parts, each numbered with our pen tool to facilitate assembly and craftsmanship in his workshop.

A textbook example of a designer who takes the production process into account during the design process.

...To create a handbag, the right shapes have to be cut from the large piece of leather. For this, the duo visited Cuthings in Heusden-Zolder. This young business on the Bewel site is specialised in cutting and milling just about any material. “We invested in digital cutting machines so that we could cut many different types of materials; you name it, we can cut it. We are really enjoying this project involving a handbag from Limburg”, says manager Kristof Weckx. ...
